Who Can Sponsor a Dependent Child?

To sponsor a dependent child, you must meet the following criteria:

  • Be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident

  • Be at least 18 years old.

  • Not be receiving social assistance (except for reasons of disability).

  • Be able and willing to provide financial support to meet the basic needs of the child.

Who Qualifies as a Dependent Child?

A child may qualify as a dependent if they meet one of the following conditions:

  • Under 22 years of age, and not married or in a common-law relationship.

  • 22 years of age or older, but unable to support themselves financially due to a physical or mental condition, and have depended on their parents for financial support since before the age of 22.

The Dependent Child Sponsorship Process

The application process generally involves the following steps:

  • Sponsorship Application – The sponsor submits an application to IRCC to be approved as a sponsor.

  • Permanent Residence Application – At the same time, the dependent child applies for permanent residence.

  • Medical and Background Checks – The child must undergo a medical exam, and security/background checks may also be required.

  • Decision and Arrival in Canada – If approved, the child will receive permanent resident status and may move to or remain in Canada with their family.

Processing Time for Dependent Child Sponsorship

Processing time for dependent child sponsorship applications can take from 12 to 24 months. It varies by every case.

Reasons for Refusal

An application may be refused if:

  • The sponsor does not meet financial or eligibility requirements.

  • The child does not meet the definition of a dependent under IRCC rules.

  • The sponsor has a serious criminal record or failed to meet obligations from a previous sponsorship.

  • The child does not pass required medical or security checks.
