Federal Skilled Worker Stream

Federal Skilled Worker Category

The Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP) is one of the sub-categories of Canada's Express Entry system, which is designed for skilled workers who wish to become permanent residents of Canada. Here are some detailed key points about the Federal Skilled Worker Program:

Eligibility Criteria:

1. Work Experience: Applicants must have at least one year (or 1,560 hours) of continuous full-time or equivalent part-time work experience in a skilled occupation within the last ten years. The work experience must be in one of the designated National Occupational Classification (NOC) skill levels 0, A, or B.

2. Language Proficiency: Applicants must demonstrate proficiency in English or French by taking an approved language test (such as IELTS or CELPIP for English, or TEF for French) and obtaining the required minimum scores. Language skills are assessed in four categories: reading, writing, listening, and speaking.

3. Education: Applicants must have completed a foreign educational credential equivalent to at least a Canadian high school diploma. It is beneficial to have a post-secondary degree, diploma, or certificate, as it can earn additional points.

4. Settlement Funds: Applicants need to show that they have sufficient funds to support themselves and their family members in Canada. The required amount depends on the number of family members accompanying the principal applicant.

Selection Factors and Points System:

Applicants are assessed based on several selection factors, and a Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) is used to assign points to each candidate. The factors include:

1. Age: Points are awarded based on the applicant's age at the time of application, with maximum points awarded to individuals between 20 and 29 years old.

2. Language Proficiency: Points are assigned based on language test results in English or French.

3. Education: Points are awarded based on the level of education and the number of years of study completed.

4. Work Experience: Points are allocated based on the number of years of work experience in a skilled occupation.

5. Arranged Employment: Points are given if the applicant has a valid job offer supported by a Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) or is eligible for a nomination certificate from a province or territory.

6. Adaptability: Points can be earned for factors such as previous work or study experience in Canada, having a close relative in Canada, or completing a qualifying job offer.

Minimum Entry Score and Draws:

Applicants enter the Express Entry pool, and regular draws are held to invite candidates with the highest CRS scores to apply for permanent residence. The minimum CRS score required varies in each draw, depending on the number of candidates and the labor market needs.

Application Process:

1. Create an Express Entry profile and meet the eligibility requirements for the Federal Skilled Worker Program.

2. Obtain an Invitation to Apply (ITA) if the CRS score meets the minimum requirements in a draw.

3. Submit a complete application for permanent residence within 60 days of receiving the ITA, including supporting documents and forms.

4. Undergo medical examinations and security/background checks.

5. If approved, receive Confirmation of Permanent Residence (COPR) and a permanent resident visa (if applicable) to travel to Canada.
