Federal Skilled Trades Worker Stream
The Federal Skilled Trades Program (FSTP) is another sub-category of Canada's Express Entry system. It is designed for skilled workers in specific trades who wish to become permanent residents of Canada. Here are some detailed key points about the Federal Skilled Trades Program:
Eligibility Criteria:
1. Work Experience: Applicants must have at least two years of full-time work experience (or an equal amount of part-time work experience) in a skilled trade within the five years preceding the application. The work experience must be in a skilled trade occupation listed in the Major Group 72, 73, 82, 92, or Minor Group 632 and 633 of the National Occupational Classification (NOC) system.
2. Language Proficiency: Applicants must meet the minimum language requirements by taking an approved language test (such as IELTS or CELPIP for English, or TEF for French) and obtaining the required scores in speaking, listening, reading, and writing.
3. Job Offer or Certificate of Qualification: Applicants must either have a valid job offer of at least one year duration from up to two employers in Canada or hold a Certificate of Qualification issued by a Canadian province or territory.
4. Eligibility by Trades: Applicants must meet specific requirements set by the province or territory for their trade. This may include additional licenses, certifications, or registrations.
Selection Factors and Points System:
Applicants are assessed based on several selection factors, and a
Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) is used to assign points to each candidate. The factors include:
1. Language Proficiency: Points are awarded based on the applicant's language test results in English or French.
2. Work Experience: Points are allocated based on the number of years of work experience in a skilled trade.
3. Education: Points are given for completion of a secondary school diploma, post-secondary education, or trade-specific training.
4. Language Proficiency of Spouse/Common-Law Partner: Additional points can be earned if the applicant's spouse or common-law partner demonstrates language proficiency in English or French.
5. Job Offer: Points are assigned for a valid job offer in Canada from up to two employers, which is supported by a Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) or an exempt offer of employment.
6. Certificate of Qualification: Points can be earned if the applicant holds a Certificate of Qualification issued by a Canadian province or territory.
Minimum Entry Score and Draws:
Applicants enter the Express Entry pool, and regular draws are held to invite candidates with the highest CRS scores to apply for permanent residence. The minimum CRS score required varies in each draw, depending on the number of candidates and the labor market needs.
Application Process:
1. Create an Express Entry profile and meet the eligibility requirements for the Federal Skilled Trades Program.
2. Obtain an Invitation to Apply (ITA) if the CRS score meets the minimum requirements in a draw.
3. Submit a complete application for permanent residence within 60 days of receiving the ITA, including supporting documents and forms.
4. Undergo medical examinations and security/background checks.
5. If approved, receive Confirmation of Permanent Residence (COPR) and a permanent resident visa (if applicable) to travel to Canada.
